CaptureGem File Locations (Windows + macOS)
If you’re trying to back up recordings, move them to a bigger drive, or do a clean reinstall, you need to know two things:
- Where videos are saved
- Where CaptureGem stores config (settings + state)
Below are the practical defaults.
Video storage location (default)
- Windows:
%LOCALAPPDATA%\capturegem\videos\out - macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/capturegem/videos/out
If you change the save location in CaptureGem settings, your output directory will differ.
Configuration directory
- Windows:
%LOCALAPPDATA%\capturegem - macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/capturegem
This directory typically contains your configuration (for example a config.json), backups, and app state.
Legacy locations (older installs)
If you upgraded from an older version, you might see videos/config in older paths:
Legacy videos
- Windows:
videos/outinside the folder where you originally unzipped CaptureGem - macOS:
~/CaptureGem_Data/videos/out
Legacy config
- Windows: the folder where you originally unzipped the application
- macOS:
~/CaptureGem_Data
Important: legacy directory priority
This catches people:
- If you already have a legacy directory (like
~/CaptureGem_Dataon macOS, or the old unzip folder on Windows) with an existing config, CaptureGem may continue using that legacy directory. - Fresh installs (no legacy dir detected) typically use the standard OS locations.
Quick tips
- If you’re troubleshooting, knowing the active config directory is step zero.
- Before doing a reset, backup your config directory and any custom save location.
