Best CaptureGem Settings: Quality vs File Size (No Regrets)

There isn’t one “best” setting—there’s the best tradeoff for your machine and workflow.

If you haven’t grabbed the app yet, start with the official download page on CaptureGem: https://www.capturegem.com/

Start with these baseline settings

If you’re not sure where to begin, use:

  • Frame rate: 30 fps
  • Resolution: match your capture target
  • Encoder: hardware (if available)
  • Bitrate/quality: medium (don’t start at ultra)

This usually produces a file that looks good without stressing your system.

When to increase quality

Increase quality if:

  • Text looks mushy
  • Fast motion turns into blocks
  • You plan to crop/zoom later

What to change first:

  1. Increase bitrate/quality a little
  2. Only then consider higher resolution

When to lower settings

Lower settings if:

  • The recording stutters
  • Your CPU/GPU spikes
  • Audio drifts out of sync

What to change first:

  1. Drop from 60 fps → 30 fps
  2. Reduce resolution one step
  3. Use a faster encoder preset

A simple “profiles” approach

Create 2 profiles and stop thinking about it:

  • Everyday profile: 30 fps, balanced quality
  • High detail profile: higher bitrate for special sessions

The win is consistency—you’ll know what to expect and your storage won’t explode.
